Tim Owens’ “We Are All Artists” is very insightful and serves as a reminder that creativity can be so simple. In a world where we often don’t have time to stop and smell the roses, it is important to not allow your creativity to be pushed down while life gets in the way. Owens’ idea is that creativity goes far beyond the most commonly recognized art mediums. Creativity is within everyone with most decisions we make, and this talk even sparks us to do some creative thinking.
When we wake up in the morning, we decide what to have for breakfast. Then, we go get dressed and decide what colors, styles, patterns, or pieces of clothing to wear. Next, we go downstairs and pack our lunch. We have to make a decision about what we want to eat 4 hours from now. So we do some thinking ahead about what future us would want. Then we decide what music to listen to on the way to work. And it goes on and on like that. All day long, we make decision after decision, not even realizing that we are making creative choices.
I really enjoyed Tim Owens’ talk because it challenges the thought that being lazy means being unaccomplished or the idea that not being a genius means you are stupid. Everything people do is creative, and it is apparent everywhere. This relates back to design in so many ways!
In design, we make decisions, often just because they feel right. We weren’t always thinking about why we chose to paint sunroom yellow, but we knew that we wanted the sunroom to be a happy place. Designers have to do some creative thinking in order to figure out how to convey messages or feelings without using words.
